Eugene picks cable drama for her next project

Posted Image

Eugene is coming back with her first drama post-marriage (to her Creating Destiny co-star Ki Tae-young), and has been cast in a new cable drama called Color of Woman.

Yeah, it’s an awkward title. I don’t love it. I suppose it could be a tie-in to the show’s setting, which takes place in a cosmetics company — as in, the color you add to make up a woman? Or maybe it’s trying to go for a poetic tone, as in The Color of Woman, only the title (which is in English, just written phonetically in hangul) leaves off the “the.”

In any case, Eugene will play Byun So-ra, the heroine who grew up in an ordinary family with an ordinary appearance. Uh, right there we’ve got a problem, since I don’t think anyone’s looking at Eugene and thinking, “Oh, she’s so ordinary-looking.” So-ra’s strength comes in her professional competence, where she’s a skilled and competitive “alpha girl.”

Early in the story, So-ra is backstabbed by her boyfriend, her dreams of becoming a professor are dashed, and she “tastes bitter defeat” before coming to work at a cosmetics company. There she starts on the path to success in both love and career, though she also meets a rival (yet to be cast) with whom she clashes.

The drama is described as a romance with “comic melo” elements, which sounds like it’s going for something a little different from standard romantic comedy. Perhaps with a dash more emotion and/or drama, though not serious enough to be straight drama.

Directing the show is a PD from Goong (though not its head director), Kim Soo-young, though I find the writing staff more noteworthy, if only for the sheer fact that we have an actual writing staff. Getting a team of four writers marks a change from the norm in dramaland, and one that I welcome. I’ve always thought it seemed crazy and burdensome to load a drama’s script responsibilities on one person for anywhere from 16 to 60 episodes; a staff seems like the saner solution.

Color of Woman’s staff will be composed of: Lee Shi-hyun of the fluffy rom-com movie Gold Digger Miss Shin; Jeon Yong-sung, a co-writer from The Host 2; Park Hyun-jin from the movie Six Years of Romance; and Choi Yeon-ji, who wrote the original Korean trendy drama, Jealousy. Eeee! Jealousy was the show that got me hooked, all those years ago in 1992, starring a much younger Choi Su-jong (President) and an effervescent Choi Jin-shil (RIP).

Color of Woman will air on cable’s Channel A beginning in December, broadcasting on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Eugene to pull out of her drama in light of her sister’s accident

Actress Eugene will be pulling out of her upcoming drama, ‘Color of Woman’, to care for her younger sister, who got involved in a serious car accident while in Guam.

Her younger sister, Yookyung, is currently in the hospital after getting run over by her parked car when it rolled down the hill. She is suffering from a fractured spine and bruises all over her body.

Hearing of the accident, Eugene made the difficult decision to pull out of her first drama since getting married earlier this year to actor, Ki Tae Young.

Her agency, G.G Entertainment, stated, “Eugene heard of the sudden accident while on her way back from a concept meeting for ‘Color of Woman’. She is currently feeling very uneasy; she is unable to sleep and is in great shock.”

They continued, “This was a difficult decision made after negotiations with the production team over this situation. She hopes for understanding and apologizes to all the fans who have anticipated her return.”

The drama production agency stated, “We regret Eugene’s unfortunate leave. We hope for a speedy recovery for her sister. We are currently looking for another actress to take her place. We will choose an actress that will match up to the high expectations of fans.”
